Four main types. Floggers: many leather strands on a handle, for a diffuse sensation. Cat o' nine tails: fewer but longer strands, more focused. Paddles: a firm flat section, for a localised strike. Crops: a thin rod with a leather square at the tip, precise. Materials: genuine leather, faux leather, silicone. Each type gives a different sensation, from a light tickle to a sharp sting.
Safe striking areas: the buttocks, the most common zone with thick muscle; the upper back at the shoulder blade; the outer thigh; and the chest (with care on a female chest). Forbidden areas: the spine; the kidneys (the flanks); the neck, face and eyes; the genitals (unless a light specialised crop); the abdomen; and over blood vessels (arteries, veins). Always with a safe word, gradual intensity and monitoring of the skin's reaction.
Factors: experience level, where beginners start with a silicone or faux-leather flogger (gentler) and the experienced with a leather cat-o'-nine; purpose, a diffuse sensation (flogger) or precise targeting (crop); intensity, which the weight and material determine; handle length, where a longer handle means more power; and brand, since branded makes (Strict Leather, Stockroom) have better build. A gradual approach. Agree first: a safe word, limits, signals. Practise on a pillow or bed for coordination. Start with light strikes, raise intensity gradually, and pause every 5-10 strikes to check in. Watch the skin: pink is normal, deep red or black means too much. Aftercare afterwards: a hug, cream, water. Never under the influence of alcohol. Always start light.
Cleaning by material. Genuine leather: wipe with a damp cloth and mild dermatological soap, not soaked in water, then leather oil afterwards to preserve it. Faux leather: water and soap. Silicone: water and toy cleaner. If used on skin with blood or fluids, full disinfection. Leather is hard to disinfect, so don't share it between people. Dry fully before storing. Store in a dry place, hung from the handle to avoid creasing.
