Massage Candles & Wax Play Candles

Check whether a candle is specifically intended for massage or wax play, because ordinary household candles are not a substitute. Compare formula, scent, container, pouring method and temperature guidance, then follow the product instructions.

Massage candles and wax play candles

Massage candles and wax play candles are not interchangeable with ordinary household candles. Products intended for massage melt into warm oil, while candles sold for wax play may be formulated for a different temperature and effect. Read the exact intended use, ingredients, burn time and instructions on the individual listing before choosing.

For massage, check the scent, container size, pouring method and whether the melted product is designed to be applied to skin. For wax play, review the stated temperature guidance and handling instructions. Keep the flame and hot container away from skin, test temperature cautiously as directed, and stop if the product feels uncomfortably hot. Never substitute an unlabelled decorative candle.

For non-candle body products, compare Massage Creams and Body Paints.

Erotic candles are candles designed for an erotic setting. Types: aromatic candles with aphrodisiac essential oils (ylang-ylang, jasmine, rose) that set a mood; massage candles that melt into body-temperature massage oil; wax play candles, low-temperature wax (45-50°C) for pouring on the body in BDSM; and decorative shapes (penis, breast, torso). The difference from normal candles: a special waxy base that melts at a lower temperature for skin safety.
Wax play is a BDSM practice of pouring warm wax onto the body. Special paraffin candles melt at 45-55°C, warm not hot, and solidify quickly on the skin, for a sensation from warmth to hardening. Avoid: normal candles (60-70°C) that burn, beeswax (62°C), and soy without special manufacture. Safe: BDSM wax brands, paraffin with stearic acid for a low melting point.
Aphrodisiac scents. Ylang-ylang: sensual, relaxing. Jasmine: sweet, exotic. Rose: romantic. Sandalwood: warm, woody. Patchouli: earthy, mysterious. Vanilla: sweet. Cinnamon: warming. Lavender: relaxing. Combinations: ylang-ylang and jasmine for romance, sandalwood and vanilla for a warm night. Test a sample first. Brands: Lush, Voluspa, Bijoux.
Burn time by size. Small votive (50g): 8-12 hours total. Medium (150-200g): 30-45 hours. Large (300-400g): 60-80 hours. Pillar (500g+): 100+ hours. Point: the first burn should be left at least 1 hour to form an even wax pool, which protects against 'tunnelling' (burning only in the centre). Maintenance: trim the wick to 6 mm before each burn, store away from sun. Massage candles last less as they fully melt: one use equals one session.
Safety rules. Never leave an open flame unattended. On a stable surface, away from fabric/paper. In wax play: test on a small area (wrist) first, not on the face/eyes. Place a pillow shield underneath to protect sheets. Extinguish with a snuffer/lid, not by blowing (it splatters wax). In a fire: never water on a petroleum candle, use baking soda or smother with a lid. Not near alcohol or oxygen therapy. Keep children and pets away.
