A gag is a BDSM toy that blocks speech and controls the mouth. Types: a ball gag, a silicone ball with a strap around the head, the classic; a bit gag, a horse-bit-style rod between the teeth; a ring gag, a metal ring holding the mouth open; a penis gag, penis-shaped; a mouth gag, a plastic frame; and a stuff gag, cloth in the mouth. Ball size. Small (1.4-1.5 inches/35-40 mm): for beginners, small mouths, gradual familiarisation. Medium (1.6-1.8 inches/40-45 mm): the most common, for average mouths. Large (2+ inches/50+ mm): for the experienced with known tolerance. Test: before buying, try an object of similar size (a carrot or a small ball). If you struggle to hold it for 30 seconds, it's too big. Always body-safe silicone, not hard TPE.
Gradual progression. First time: 5-10 minutes. Familiarisation: 15-20 minutes. Maximum safe time: 30 minutes continuously. Breaks every 10-15 minutes to: clean drool, breathe through the mouth, relax the jaw muscles, and check for nausea. Not recommended: prolonged use over 1 hour; while intoxicated; on a full stomach (vomiting/choking risk); or during sleep. The advice: communicate a target duration beforehand.
Cleaning is essential due to direct mouth contact. Rinse immediately with warm water; fully wash with mild soap or toy cleaner; check drool on cloth/straps, and for leather, wipe with a damp cloth; silicone can be boiled for 3-5 minutes; dry fully. If used by two people, a separate gag for each or full sterilisation. The advice: replace every 1-2 years due to silicone wear from saliva.
