An anal douche is a device that introduces water into the rectum to clean it before anal activity. There are a few forms. A bulb douche is a 200-400 ml rubber ball with a nozzle, cheap and easy. A shower attachment connects to your shower for continuous flow. An enema bag hangs with a tube for larger capacity. A travel bottle is a disposable plastic option. The purpose is internal cleaning for hygiene and peace of mind.

Follow the steps. Fill the douche with lukewarm water, never hot or cold, and lubricate the nozzle. Sit or lie down in the bathroom, insert the nozzle 3-5 cm, then slowly release the water. Wait 30-60 seconds, release into the toilet and repeat 2-3 times until the water runs clear. Leave a 30-minute gap before the activity so the rectum settles. Ideally douche 1-2 hours beforehand.

Medical guidance is clear. Don't douche daily, as it disrupts the natural flora and the mucous lining. One to two times a week is a safe frequency for an active anal audience, and only before activity. Overdoing it risks bowel dehydration, flora disruption that invites yeast infections, electrolyte imbalance with large volumes and irritation of the lining. For most situations, washing the outside with soap is enough on its own.

There are a few options. Tap water is practical and, where it's safe to drink as in Greece, fine at a lukewarm temperature. A saline solution, one teaspoon of salt per litre, sits closer to the body's osmotic pressure and irritates less, so it suits frequent use. Pre-made enema fluid from a pharmacy works but is costly and rarely necessary. Avoid soapy water, alcohol or other chemicals, which seriously irritate the lining.

Cleaning prevents bacterial growth. Right after use, rinse it inside and out with warm water, then wash the nozzle and body with antibacterial soap and dry it fully. For a rubber bulb, draw air in and out 5-10 times to dry the inside, and store it somewhere ventilated. Replace it every 6-12 months, since rubber ages. If two people use one, keep separate douches or disinfect fully between users; don't share.
