Pheromone perfumes are colognes that add synthetic pheromones beyond their normal fragrance. The main ones are androstenone (masculine, a signal of strength), androstenol (youth and friendliness), copulins (feminine, vaginal-derived) and estratetraenol (feminine). Where regular perfumes aim at olfactory pleasure, pheromone ones target a subconscious response. Brands include Pherazone and Liquid Trust.

It's debated, as with pheromones generally. In humans the vomeronasal organ is non-functional in adults; some studies show a small effect on mood and perceived attractiveness, others don't confirm it, and the placebo effect is significant, with the user feeling more confident and changing their posture. On top of that, the fragrance itself (beyond the pheromones) gives the classic appeal. Buy them for the scent and the psychological boost, not because they'll pull someone subconsciously.

They use different pheromones. Male perfumes contain androstenone (to attract women), androstenol (friendliness) and androsterone (a strength signal). Female perfumes contain copulins (vaginal secretions) and estratetraenol, while some unisex ones combine both. The targeting follows: male to attract women, female to attract men. For same-sex attraction, some brands make gay-specific blends, such as Pherazone for Gay Men. Choose based on your desired target and personal gender expression.

Apply them like normal perfumes. Put them on clean skin, at pulse points such as the wrist, neck and behind the ears, with 1-2 sprays. Don't rub them in, as that changes the chemistry, and wait 30 seconds before dressing. Reapply pheromones every 4-6 hours, since they fade faster than the fragrance ingredients. On a hot day they mix more with sweat.

Use a few criteria. The desired effect: androstenol for social or dating, light for professional settings, high-concentration androstenone for seduction, androsterone for a confidence boost. The base fragrance, woody, citrus, floral or oriental, should be one you like to wear. Check the pheromone concentration in copies-per-million (higher is stronger), the brand (Pherazone, Liquid Trust, Athena Institute) and the price: quality runs 50-150 euros, while cheap ones under 20 are usually vague on pheromones. Try a sample before buying full size.
