Each lube base suits a different need. Water-based feels natural, works with every toy and condom and rinses off easily, but dries faster and needs reapplying. Silicone-based is thicker, lasts much longer and is great in water, though it shouldn't touch silicone toys. Hybrid blends a smooth feel with longer staying power at a higher price. As a rule, pick water-based for everyday use and silicone for prolonged or in-water play.

Compatibility is a safety issue. Water-based, silicone and hybrid lubes are all safe with every condom type. Oil-based products such as baby oil or petroleum jelly are the exception: they break down latex and leave it unable to protect. Oils are fine only with polyurethane. The key rule is never to use kitchen oils or cosmetic creams as lube with a latex condom. Branded lubricants state their compatibility right on the packaging.

It depends on the toy's material. On silicone toys use only water-based or hybrid lube, since silicone-on-silicone wears down the surface and causes it to wrinkle. TPE and TPR take water or silicone. Stainless steel and glass work with everything. Latex items prefer water-based. If you're unsure, test a little on a hidden spot and check for damage after 24 hours. Water-based remains the safest choice across all materials.

Many lubes market themselves as natural, so it helps to read the label. Aloe vera is a gentle natural lubricant for sensitive skin, and carrageenan is a thick plant-based gel. Glycerine, common in water-based lubes, can trigger yeast infections in some people, and parabens are best avoided when skin is sensitive. Look for organic, vegan or paraben-free certifications. Brands like Sliquid, Good Clean Love and Yes focus on natural formulas.

Staying power varies by base. Water-based lasts 5-15 minutes before drying and needs a top-up or a spritz of water; long-lasting versions with hyaluronic acid stretch to 20-30 minutes. Silicone-based is the most durable at 30-60 minutes or more. Hybrid sits in between at 20-40 minutes. For water play or prolonged anal use, choose silicone. As for shelf life, an opened bottle keeps for 12-24 months and a sealed one for 2-3 years.

There's a clear difference. Regular sports massage oils are plant-based, like sweet almond or jojoba, with a neutral or no scent, aimed at muscle relaxation. Erotic oils share that base but add sensual aromas, essential oils and pheromones, often with warming or cooling effects or an edible formula, aimed at sensual foreplay and erotic massage. On compatibility, oils are not safe with latex condoms, which they dissolve, but fine with polyurethane; with toys, water/TPE/steel are fine, but not silicone on silicone.

Edible or kissable oils are designed for oral contact. They use food-grade plant oils like coconut or almond, sugar or stevia and natural flavours, with no toxic ingredients, often flavoured as strawberry, chocolate or mango, and are safe to swallow in small amounts. Still, check for allergies; diabetics should note that sugar can affect glucose, and anyone prone to yeast or candida should know sugary oils raise the risk. Always check the expiry date. Brands include Kama Sutra, Bijoux Indiscrets and Shunga.

Build on a few core techniques. Effleurage is a smooth, low-pressure glide of the palm for warming up and relaxing. Petrissage kneads with the fingers at medium pressure for deeper muscle release. Friction uses small circles with the fingers for focused intensity. Light tapping stimulates the skin. Move in a sequence from the back to the buttocks, inner thighs, torso and then erogenous zones, over 20-40 minutes for a full erotic massage. Warm oil at 35-40°C, heated in a bowl of warm water, feels far better.

Weigh a few factors. Purpose first: relaxing with lavender or chamomile, aphrodisiac with jasmine or ylang-ylang, warming with cinnamon or ginger, or edible. Then the base: almond for general use, jojoba for sensitive skin, coconut when it needs to be edible. Consider natural essential oils versus synthetic scents, condom compatibility (polyurethane if needed), and a glass bottle to keep out light. Brands include Kama Sutra, Shunga and Bijoux, at prices of 15-50 euros.

Oils do leave stains, so prevention helps most. Lay a towel underneath for the best protection, use a vinyl or PVC sheet for an easy-clean waterproof layer, keep old sheets just for erotic use, or use a separate massage table. To remove stains, blot immediately with paper, wash at a high temperature with dishwasher detergent, which cuts oil better than regular detergent, and pre-treat with Marseille soap before washing. Repeat if a stain lingers, and use bleach on white sheets.
