Sex shops stock specialised make-up: cosplay make-up for characters (harlequins, vampires, fantasy), latex and body paint for full bodies or effects (blood, gashes), drag queen make-up with bold, exaggerated colours, BDSM aesthetic looks (dark eyes, pink lips) and body glitter. The difference from everyday cosmetics is that branded lines like Mehron and Kryolan hold up far better against sweat, spray and water, staying put during intense activity, and are body-safe and hypoallergenic where possible.

Branded body paint is safe. Check that it's FDA-approved or cosmetic-grade, hypoallergenic, and either water-based for easy removal or alcohol-based for durability, and paraben-free. Side effects include pigment allergies (so patch test), stomach upset if swallowed, and respiratory issues with an airbrush used without a mask. Remove it with water and soap or a remover. Brands include Mehron, Snazaroo and Wolfe FX.

Edible body make-up is made for oral contact, using edible pigments, sugar or stevia, glycerine and flavourings. It's used for body painting between partners, strip play and edible nipple covers. It differs from regular body paint, which may contain non-edible ingredients. Watch for allergies, note the sugar if you're diabetic, and don't use it in the vagina if you're prone to yeast infections. Brands include Cake Beauty and Touch of Honey.

Remove it by type. Water-based comes off with a shower and mild soap in 5-10 minutes. Alcohol-based needs a special remover and may leave residue for 1-2 days. Latex lifts with 91% isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated remover. For glitter, press sticky tape on first, which lifts it, then wash with soap and water. For a full body, shower, wash and scrub if needed; keeping the skin moist protects it.

For a professional result you'll want a few tools: body brushes (fluffy for broad areas), detail brushes (fine for lines), stippling sponges for textures, an airbrush for pro work, stencils for designs and a setting spray to lock it in. Clean them after every use with a brush cleaner and dry them flat. Start with a 4-5 brush starter kit from Mehron or Wolfe FX.
